How to build a career objective

In this millennial generation of today, where jobs are placed at the higher most level of the human hierarchy, securing a place in your dream company is key. Generally, a resume is to be sent beforehand to the company for them to understand the employee’s needs and requirements. A career objective or a resume objective mentions the goals and objective of your career. It is a heading statement of your resume, in which you describe your professional goals in the job you’re applying for. A resume objective is usually 2–3 sentences long and should be placed at the top of your resume. You should tailor it to the position on offer.

Importance of a career objective

As a career objective is placed on the top of the resume, it draws attention to the company. Drawing attention becomes key to secure a position and put forth your stance, in order to voice out why you need the job. A well-written objective will provide the recruiter the confidence that you, as a candidate, are both eligible and deserving of the job. This helps both when you are starting out as an apprentice or have had previous experience.

Situations that demand a Career Objective

  1. Career Change
  2. College Student
  3. Fresh Graduate
  4. High School Student
  5. No Work Experience

Pointers for a good career objective write-up

  1. Start with a strong trait, a strength of yours, with an addition of 2 or more skills that describe your career goals and put forth what you would, as an employee, be an asset to the company.
  2. State in brief, the position you are applying for and use the company’s name as a benchmark.
  3. Keep it short and crisp. An ideal objective would be about 30-50 words.
  4. Avoid using first-person pronouns or personal references.

A good career objective commands your position in the firm and asserts your role as an employee. A well-written objective is crisp and clear and can help you secure your dream position in the choice of company, while a shabby, elaborate piece, where you rant about yourself, well, don’t even think about it. PERIOD.
